    World AIDS Day. December 1.

    November 24, 2015: "Today, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention published a new report that finds 1 in 4 gay and bisexual men; 1 in 5 people who inject drugs; and 1 in 200 heterosexually active adults are at substantial risk for HIV infection and could benefit from more information about pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), a daily pill for HIV prevention.

    PrEP is a highly effective prevention option that, when taken daily, can reduce the risk of sexually acquired HIV infection by more than 90 percent and by more than 70% among people who inject drugs.

    Key findings:

    • Approximately 25% of sexually active gay and bisexual men had substantial risks for HIV consistent with PrEP indications;
    • Nearly 20% of persons who inject drugs had substantial risks for HIV consistent with PrEP indications;
    • And less than 1% of heterosexuals had substantial risks for HIV consistent with PrEP indications."

    Diabetes and GMOS
    Graphic source: https://peperperspective.files.wordpress.com/2015/01/slide3.jpg
    Here is an interesting look at how environmental factors may be contributing to the rise in diabetes.
    • "In the USA glyphosate is the most widely used herbicide and about 250 million pounds are applied to U.S farms and even lawns every year. In addition, the common wheat harvest protocol in the United States is to drench the wheat fields with Roundup several days prior to harvesting. This allow crops to dry down for an earlier, easier and bigger harvest (Swanson et al, 2014; Sarah, 2014). Glyphosate and the many other herbicides and pesticides are in our food, animal fodder and thus in the meat, clothing, water supply and even air. Almost all human and animal food now contains low levels of glyphosate and its inert but poisonous additional ingredients which may impact our health.
    • The increased application of glyphosate with the increase of chronic diseases over the last 35 years correlates highly (great than 0.9) and is highly significant for obesity (R=0.96), diabetes (R=0.98), end stage renal disease death (R=0.97), Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis (R=0.94), death due to intestinal infection (R=0.97), autism in children (6-21 years) (R=0.99), deaths from senile dementia (R=0.99), and death from Alzheimer's (R=0.93).

    2015 Public Health Thank You Day
    Graphic source: http://www.researchamerica.org/phtyd

    Gratitude is always a good thing because it helps us to keep Life in perspective. We take so many things for granted that we don't appreciate what we have until we don't have it anymore.

    I like Research!America's annual "Public Health Thank You Day" because it puts what is my greatest love, Public Health, on the forefront, even if it's just for one day a year.

    Here's a great video that shows the scope of Public Health.

    A re-posting of my 2009 blog entry: Here are some of things we can be thankful for, with many thanks to all the Public Health Professionals, at all levels of practice, who have dedicated their careers to protecting the Public's Health in a variety of ways...

    • Waking up this morning from clean bedding that is not contaminated by pathogens;
    • Using a bathroom so human waste is disposed of properly;
    • Being able to drink water from the faucet without getting some disease;
    • Being able to eat breakfast without getting some disease;
    • Dropping off your kids in schools knowing they won't get sick because everyone got their immunizations;
    • Driving to work and not being exposed to harmful emissions from motor vehicles;
    • Going to work and spending the day in an environment that won't make you sick;
    • Going to lunch and eating in a restaurant that's been inspected;
    • Going for a walk and not being exposed to second-hand smoke or rotting garbage;
    • Getting a haircut and knowing those cutting your hair have been licensed;
    • Going to see health care professionals and knowing they are competent because they are licensed to practice;
    • Going to any health care facility and knowing they are licensed;
    • Going to bed and feeling safe because disaster preparedness exists at every level of government.

    2013 Diabetes statisticsGraphic adapted by bettycjung from http://healthintelligence.drupalgardens.com/content/prevalence-diabetes-world-2013
    Diabetes is a chronic metabolic disease that occurs when the human body is not able to produce enough of the hormone insulin or because cells do not respond to the insulin that is produced. High blood sugar produces symptoms of frequent urination, increased thirst and hunger.

    There are three main types of diabetes:

    • Type 1 diabetes results from the body's failure to produce insulin as a result of an auto-immune process with very sudden onset. People with this type of diabetes need insulin therapy to survive. This form was previously referred to as "insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus"
    • Type 2 diabetes results from insulin resistance, a condition in which cells fail to use insulin properly, sometimes combined with an absolute insulin deficiency. This form was previously referred to as non insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus. It can go unnoticed and undiagnosed for a long time. Those people affected are unaware of the long-term damage being caused by the disease.
    • Gestational diabetes occurs when pregnant women without a previous diagnosis of diabetes develop a high blood glucose level; it can lead to serious risks to the mothers and her infant and increase the risk for developing type 2 diabetes later in life.

    In May 2012, WHO released "WHO's World Health Statistics 2012" and the United Nations News Centre reported:
    • "...one in 10 suffers from diabetes.
    • "The number of people with...diabetes is drastically increasing in both developed and developing countries
    • In the case of diabetes, the global average prevalence is around 10 per cent, with up to one third of populations in some Pacific Island countries having this condition. Left untreated, diabetes can lead to cardiovascular disease, blindness and kidney failure."

    Diabetes Belt
    Map source: http://www.fool.com/investing/general/2014/09/06/7-states-where-diabetes-prevalence-is-the-highest.aspx
    According to Motley Fool's "7 States Where Diabetes Prevalence Is the Highest":
    • According to CDC statistics, the seven states where the highest percentage of adults have been diagnosed with diabetes as of 2010 are:
      Mississippi (11.3%)
      Alabama (11.1%)
      West Virginia (10.7%)
      Louisiana (10.3%)
      Tennessee (10.2%)
      Oklahoma (10.1%)
      Kentucky (10.1%)
    • With the exception of Oklahoma, a number of counties in these aforementioned states, as well as in a handful of other adjoining states, make up what the CDC refers to as the "diabetes belt." Diabetes belt as defined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
    • This geographic outlay represents the area of the country where type 2 diabetes (the most common form of diabetes, which tends to occur later in life and accounts for over 90% of all diabetes cases) is the most prevalent. While there is no one specific cause of diabetes, the CDC does note that the diabetes belt has a higher rate of obesity and a lower rate of leisure-time physical activity compared to other areas in the United States.

    Effects of Sleep Loss
    Graphic source: http://www.eurekalert.org/multimedia/pub/63607.php

    Sleep loss causes changes to the system that regulates our immune defence. Some of these changes appear to be long-term, and may contribute to the development of cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes.
    Credit: Vilma Aho / Univ. of Helsinki

    According to University of Helsinki researchers , in "New biological links between sleep deprivation and the immune system discovered"
    • "Population-level studies have indicated that insufficient sleep increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes. These diseases are known to be linked to inflammatory responses in the body.
    • "We compared the gene expression before and after the sleep deprivation period, and focused on the genes whose behaviour was most strongly altered," "The expression of many genes and gene pathways related to the functions of the immune system was increased during the sleep deprivation. There was an increase in activity of B cells which are responsible for producing antigens that contribute to the body's defensive reactions, but also to allergic reactions and asthma. This may explain the previous observations of increased asthmatic symptoms in a state of sleep deprivation."
    • The amount of certain interleukins, or signalling molecules which promote inflammation, increased, as did the amount of associated receptors such as Toll-like receptors (TLR). On the gene level, this was apparent in the higher-than-normal expression of the TLR4 gene after sleep loss. CRP level was also elevated, indicating inflammation.
    • These results corroborate the idea that sleep does not only impact brain function, but also interacts with our immune system and metabolism. Sleep loss causes changes to the system that regulates our immune defence. Some of these changes appear to be long-term, and may contribute to the development of diseases that have been linked to sleep deprivation in epidemiological research,"

The last one was in 1982 and if you miss the one on Sunday, Sept. 27, you'll have to wait for the next one which won't happen until 2033. • It's the outcome the world wants to avoid, but we are already halfway there,
    • All but one of the main trackers of global surface temperature are now passing more than 1 C of warming relative to the second half of the 19th century which is halfway to the 2 degrees Celsius of warming the United Nations constitutes as dangerous warming.

  • July 17, 2015 - Using Social Media to Get the News

    Facebook and Twitter for news
    Graphic source: http://www.journalism.org/2015/07/14/news-use-on-facebook-and-twitter-is-on-the-rise/
    According to PEW's "The Evolving Role of News on Twitter and Facebook":
    • "On both Facebook and Twitter, more users are getting news than in the past. As of early 2015, 63% of Facebook and Twitter users get news on their respective sites. This is up substantially from 2013, when about half of each social network's users (47% for Facebook and 52% for Twitter) reported getting news there."

    Twitter and Facebook
    Graphic Source: http://www.journalism.org/2015/07/14/the-evolving-role-of-news-on-twitter-and-facebook/
    According to PEW's "The Evolving Role of News on Twitter and Facebook":
    • "The share of Americans for whom Twitter and Facebook serve as a source of news is continuing to rise. This rise comes primarily from more current users encountering news there rather than large increases in the user base overall.
    • ...users turn to each of these prominent social networks to fulfill different types of information needs.
    • ...clear majorities of Twitter (63%) and Facebook users (63%) now say each platform serves as a source for news about events and issues outside the realm of friends and family.
    • That share has increased substantially from 2013, when about half of users (52% of Twitter users, 47% of Facebook users) said they got news from the social platforms.
    • Although both social networks have the same portion of users getting news on these sites, there are significant differences in their potential news distribution strengths. The proportion of users who say they follow breaking news on Twitter, for example, is nearly twice as high as those who say they do so on Facebook (59% vs. 31%) lending support, perhaps, to the view that Twitter's great strength is providing as-it-happens coverage and commentary on live events."

    According to "How Often Do US Smartphone Owners Check Their Devices?":
    • "Roughly half (52%) of US smartphone owners say they check their phone a few times an hour (41%) or every few minutes (11%),...to almost three-quarters (73%) of young (18-29) smartphone owners.
    • Besides the age skew, the survey also finds men slightly more likely than women to frequently check their smartphones, and iPhone users similarly slightly more likely than Android owners.
    • Overall, about 8 in 10 device owners surveyed said they keep their smartphone near them almost all the time during their waking hours."

  • July 8, 2015 - Percent Share by Industry

    Social Media Links
    Graphic Source: http://blog.hubspot.com/marketing/social-media-homepages
    According to 6/20/2015's "New Data: Should You Include Social Media Icons on Your Homepage?" Report:
    • "At 86%, Non-profits link to social media on their homepage more than any other industry. This is understandable considering low marketing budgets, people's propensity to share about causes, and the potential benefit to any story going viral. It's for these same reasons that religious sites aren't far behind, with 83% of homepages including social media links.
    • The industries at the bottom of any social media list are often the ones plagued by legal stipulations, small audience sizes or a minimal focus on social media marketing. While biotech, manufacturing, energy and B2B goods are understandably low due to these varying reasons, ecommerce and finance stand out."
