10/15/2001 - With the release of the 5th edition July 2001, it is time to devote a Web page to the APA format. While not the easiest writing style to use, it is the accepted style for the social sciences. To comply with the new standards, I will be noting changes and points of interest on this page, and will expect my students to comply. This Web page does not replace the need to read the manual, but saves me from having to repeat myself during the editorial process. The 5th edition does provide an excellent foundation for proper grammatical usage and excellent written expression.
University of Southern Mississippi's Plagiarism Tutorial An excellent review of how to cite your sources. Has information on how to use the APA format.

New to 5th Edition (July, 2001)
  • Use of bold and italics - Yes, this is currently allowed. Earlier APA format distinguished between manuscripts and what you submit for publication. Now with wordprocessors, it is possible to italicize text.
  • When citing electronic references, I would like to see the most direct source for an electronic citation. That means, it is not acceptable to use an e-mail address (URL=uniform resource locator) or the main Web site address as the source for a research article. For example, it is not acceptable to cite: http://www.cdc.gov for a Web page you are using found on the CDC Web site. If you are using a particular Web page, then I would like to see the entire URL (i.e., http://www.bettycjung.net/Apainfo.htm). You must include a suffix, as htm, html, etc. I realize that with MS Word, this may turn on the color and underlining features. You can turn these features off. Your reader, by typing the URL you provide, should be able to retrieve the source you are citing.
  • I have written to the APA regarding paragraph citations for Internet resources (11/12/01). For now, I would recommend that you print out ALL sources that you use for your Special Project. Printing out the Internet sources will provide page numbers, which you then can cite. I recommend that you keep these printouts for 5 years after completion of your Special Project, as Internet sources tend to change over time. This is consistent with research methodology in retaining data collected for a research paper for 5 years. By printing out the Web pages, you will have paper copies of the references you used as you retrieved them. I realize that this will not contribute to a paperless society in the near future, but you will have the documentation you used for your research, which is important from a research ethics standpoint.
